Oprah Winfrey
Because Oprah Winfrey has been through so much in her life personally, she has made the choice of changing the lives of many people around the world through being a media proprietor, philanthropist, talk show host, and actress.
Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29th, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah's career initially started when, after winning a beauty pageant for her city, she started being on radio shows and was even offered a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. At the university, she majored in Speech Communication and Performing Arts, both of which largely impacted her career now. After one of her radio shows became extremely popular, they named it The Oprah Winfrey Show, which one year later became televised nationally, quickly becoming the number one talk show. The show and Oprah herself won many awards, for things such as helping and talking to people. Oprah Winfrey's show emphasizes spiritual values, healthy living, and self-help. Being motivated by what she had to go through as a child, she has created many campaigns for abused children. Oprah testified in front of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to pass the National Child Protection act. Bill Clinton went on to sign what was known as the "Oprah Bill" into law in 1993. Oprah went on to make her own television network called OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) and ended The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her philanthropic efforts were recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences, and she received a special Oscar statue. President Obama awarded Oprah with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

Ed Sheeran
Being a popular modern day singer/songwriter, Ed Sheeran can greatly affect the global media of today by doing things such as charities.
Ed Sheeran was born on February 17th, 1991 in Halifax, England. He started singing when he was 4 in his church choir, and began actually recording music when he was about 14. One night, Ed bought a one way ticket to California, and played very small venues with little people. He was even homeless for some time while trying to promote himself. Over the years, his fanbase and popularity grew more and more. After releasing his album '+' in England, it became widely popular all over the world. Ed is quite well known for the guitars he uses, and he put that to good use. He created a guitar similar to the ones he uses, and sold them for the EACH charity, (East Anglia's Children's Hospice). ALL of the money made from these charity guitars will go to the fund. The fund raised about $16,098 total, and the EACH representatives were ecstatic. Ed also performed a gig in Bristol for street-sex workers that raised about $64,392. He says, "It's good to show insight that these people are real people with real emotions and they deserve the same charity work as anyone else." Ed is also working with the charity F*** Cancer currently to help raise money for the tools and programs used during cancer to focus on your heart and mind. People donate money to the charity and one lucky winner will receive a fun evening out with the man himself.

Charles Darwin
Most know just Charles Darwin from his theories on evolution and natural selection, but people don’t actually know the details of his career with exploring the ocean. What was planned to be a two-year trip turned into a five-year trip upon the ship the HMS Beagle. For most of the five years, the Beagle was along the South American coast, allowing Darwin to explore much of the Galápagos Islands as well. He was on the ship as the captain’s assistant. He filled tons of notebooks with observations of plants and animals there. He also collected thousands of specimens that he took home with him to study further. He called the exploration: “by far the most important event of my life.” Marine science only took up small proportion of his notes, but still he studied marine life at every opportunity. He used a plankton net when the Beagle was at sea, investigated sea shores, estuaries and tropical lagoons. Upon arriving at the Galápagos Islands, Charles Darwin finds different species of many things unique to the island, such as tortoises. He notices that they are similar to the mainland tortoises, but very different as well. He is particularly interested in the fact that they were so large; big enough to ride on their shells. He also came across a distinctive kind of iguana, a marine iguana. It was the only type of iguana to swim and breathe in the ocean. Darwin opened the stomach of some and found them full of nothing but seaweed. The ship them took them to the Coco’s Islands (Keeling Islands) where Darwin studied coral reefs to study his theory of atoll formation. Atolls are coral reefs that form small islands that enclose a lagoon. Darwin claimed that the foundation for the atoll was a volcano that was sinking because of its weight. As the volcano sinks, coral reefs that rim the volcano grow upwards.

Major Accomplishments
- Came up with theory that all species of life have evolved over time from one or a few common ancestors via natural selection.
- On his 5 year Beagle journey, he found a wide variety of geological features, fossils and living organisms, and collected a large number of unknown specimens.
- Studied atolls and came up with a theory of the formation of them, saying that they are almost like an inward volcano.
